Seppi tossed and turned, dreaming of Fern slamming her door again and again, tasting her salty tears on his lips, feeling her soft, warm form in his embrace as he’d farewelled her. The sense of urgency to get to Dragons’ Hold had taken him in its fierce grip. Surely he could have stayed another day to farewell Fern. What was a day, when he was likely to be here for weeks or moons? He woke many times that night, tangled in his covers with his limbs thrashing, dreaming he was fighting Septimor, so he could stay in Montanara.

But the dragon always won.

Bright and early, he rolled out of bed, washed his face with water from a basin, and tugged on his new riders’ garb.

“You’re new here, aren’t you?” A robust Naobian asked, his dark curls damp after washing his own face.

“I am. I just imprinted with a dragon yesterday in Great Spanglewood Forest.”

“Which part of the forest?” the trainee rider asked, yanking on his shirt.

“On the edge of Montanara.”

“So you’ve felt the urgency of the imprinting bond that whisks you away from your loved ones, too!” The lad laughed. “I’m Remi. What color is your dragon? Mine’s emerald, with scales the shade of fresh moss. Her name’s Remira.”

Seppi nodded. “I’m Seppi. My dragon, Septimor, has cobalt scales.”

Remi waved a hand at three lads stumbling out of bed. “Meet Horace, Maurice and Darynn.” He waved a hand at two brown-haired riders who looked like brothers, and a stocky trainee with a dark braid hanging over one shoulder. “Imprinting can be confusing. I know everyone experiences it differently, but we all have that same urgent rush to get to Dragons’ Hold and start a new life with our dragons. Let us know if you have questions.”

“Morning,” Darynn called, his dark braid sliding down his chest as he leaned down to pick up his breeches.

“Talk about confusing,” Maurice offered, raking a comb through his brown hair.

“We’re all in the same boat when we first get here,” Horace said.

“Except we’re not on boats or we’d be pirates,” Maurice teased, jabbing his brother in the ribs with an elbow. “Horace always wanted to be a pirate when he was younger.”

Horace rolled his eyes, jabbing his brother back, and their banter degenerated into a scuffle.

Seppi addressed Remi. “As a matter of fact, I do have a question. Is there a way to get a message back home?”

“Sure.” Remi pointed past the double rows of beds to a desk in the corner with inkpots, quills, and a stack of parchment on it. “There’s a small cavern on the upper level with littlings who tend messenger birds, the ravens who fly messages across Dragons’ Realm.”

As if he needed an explanation of what a messenger bird was—but Seppi was grateful Remi was helpful. “You have messenger birds here? I would’ve thought our dragons could relay messages via one another. After all, they can mind-meld with one another, can’t they?”

“They can, and they do,” Remi answered.
